Has your physician recommended you see a neurologist? Or have you recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS)? If so, the Boston Medical Center Multiple Sclerosis Center can provide you with a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment.

MS can be hard to diagnose. Symptoms are unpredictable and may be completely different from person-to-person. This unpredictability, along with the unknown impacts, can be overwhelming. There is much to consider after an MS diagnosis and getting answers quickly will help you make the best decisions possible.

Some questions that you might need to answer include: Which doctor or hospital is the right choice for you? Will you be able to get an appointment with a neurologist in a timely manner? What treatment options are available? How do you find a physician that speaks your language? Will the hospital accept your insurance? And even if you have insurance, will you be able to afford the care you need?

At BMC’s MS Center, our team of MS experts is committed to helping people with multiple sclerosis live their best possible lives by delivering personalized care that addresses your holistic needs.

The experts at the Multiple Sclerosis Center have outlined their patient-focused approach to getting exceptional MS care at BMC when you need answers fast.

1. Access to appointments -- when you need it.

If you would like to have your symptoms evaluated at the MS Center, you will need to get a referral from your primary care physician and have a copy of your medical records sent to the clinic. Call 617-638-8456 to schedule an appointment with one of our expert neurologists. We schedule all new patients within a week after they call.

2. Timely diagnosis and immediate answers.

We understand the urgency and importance of getting answers to your questions about our health, so our goal is to move quickly. During your first visit, we’ll provide you with as many answers as possible before you leave.

Care at BMC starts with you. We’re here to listen, to understand your symptoms, and what you are currently experiencing with your health. We then perform a comprehensive neurological exam. Once your results and information are analyzed, your neurologist will give you a diagnosis, usually at that first visit.

3. Experienced, compassionate MS experts, all focused on giving you the best care available.

In addition to the MS specialists at the MS Center, we’ll involve highly-skilled specialists across the hospital to make sure that all your needs are addressed. This includes working closely with neurologists, physical therapists, neuropsychologists, ophthalmologists, pain management professions, and other specialists as needed.

4. Personalized treatment options. Innovative therapies.

If a diagnosis can’t be made at your first visit, you’ll leave with additional tests scheduled to get you a diagnosis as quickly as possible. Whether you’re diagnosed with MS on your first visit or a follow-up, your neurologist start treatment the same day whenever possible. Moving forward, your team of MS experts will work together to develop a comprehensive, personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique symptoms and needs.

5. It takes more than medicine to help you stay healthy.

From day one, the MS Center nurse coordinator will be your main point of contact and an integral part of your care team. The MS Center nurse coordinator will be there to help get answers to your questions about MS or your treatment—including medications. She can also help connect you to non-medical resources such as housing or food assistance.
