Welcome to the Surgery Training Program at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center

Our institution has a long history with roots that go back more than 150 years. Our past provides a strong foundation, a rich tradition, and a well-defined identity, but we continue to strive for a future of progress, innovation and excellence.

The Boston University Surgery Residency Program provides residents with the range and depth of academic experience and academic exposure required to develop superior surgical skills and an ability to make mature, informed, independent judgments. Our five-year program, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), is committed to preparing future generations of surgeons.

The principal goal of the program is clinical excellence. We provide exposure to a large, diverse patient population and broad experience in complex open and minimally invasive surgery, which are the essential elements in the training of outstanding surgeons.

We encourage residents interested in careers in academic surgery to develop the necessary skills in surgical research, education, and/or administration through a broad range of opportunities designed to maximize academic development.

About Boston Medical Center

The Surgery Residency Program is based at Boston University Medical Center, a modern medical complex located in the heart of Boston’s South End. The medical center includes Boston University School of Medicine, the Boston University School of Public Health, and the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, as well as Boston Medical Center.

Boston Medical Center is a private, not-for-profit, 567-bed academic medical center. It is the primary teaching affiliate for Boston University School of Medicine. Boston Medical Center emphasizes community-based care, with its mission to provide consistently accessible health services to all. The largest safety-net hospital in New England, Boston Medical Center provides a full spectrum of pediatric and adult care services, from primary to family medicine to advanced specialty care. Boston Medical Center is the largest and busiest provider of trauma and emergency services in New England.

Supervision is provided by an attending surgeon with clinical and surgical expertise in every major area, providing close supervision and consultation for all residents to assist them in planning a surgical career either as a general surgeon or as a specialist.

The program recognizes the importance of surgical preparation for the certifying and qualifying examinations of the American Board of Surgery. Board examination techniques are introduced to the resident as surgical judgment and technical skills are developed.

Clinical research, as a method for developing the appropriate approach to clinical problems, is expected from all residents. Basic research opportunities are also available and encouraged for those who are interested in adding this expertise to their academic development.
