Lupus nephritis is a type of kidney disease caused when lupus - a systemic autoimmune disease - attacks your kidneys. 

Approximately half of adults with lupus will get kidney damage from their condition. Lupus nephritis can ultimately lead to kidney failure.

Symptoms of lupus nephritis include:

  • Swelling in your legs, feet, or ankles
  • Foamy urine
  • High blood pressure
  • Joint pain
  • Fever
  • Muscle pain
  • Rash
