Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis) are common birth defects occurring worldwide, often individually or together. The incomplete formation of the upper lip (cleft lip) or roof of the mouth (cleft palate) can vary and affect one or both sides of the face. Plastic surgery can be done to correct this abnormality that occurred during fetal development, restoring function to improve a patient's ability to eat, speak, hear and breathe, and to restore a more normal appearance and function.
