Car Seat Safety

A properly installed car seat is one of the best ways to protect your baby during every trip—starting with the first ride home from the hospital. Boston Medical Center can help you choose, install, and use your car seat safely.

Installing Your Car Seat

Newborns must ride in a rear-facing car seat for every trip. Our staff will walk you through how to secure your baby safely, offering hands-on practice and time for questions. We also provide free installation and safety checks to ensure your car seat is properly fitted before you head home.

To schedule an appointment, call the Public Safety supervisor at 617-414-4444, or find an installation site near you.

Car Seat FAQs

Why do I need a car seat?

Massachusetts law requires all newborns to have a rear-facing car seat. Car seats significantly reduce the risk of injury (by up to 71 percent) and death (by up to 28 percent) in children.

What kind of car seat will my newborn need?

Your baby should ride in a rear-facing car seat designed for infants. Many models have been tested for safety and can be found in stores or online.

I don’t have a car or plan to use public transportation—do I still need one?

Yes. BMC requires all newborns to have a rear-facing car seat before going home, even if you don’t own a car.

Most models can clip into a stroller, making them convenient for walks or public transportation.

Where can I get a car seat?

  • Insurance provider: Check with your insurance plan—some offer free or discounted car seats. (For example, Wellsense members may qualify.)
  • Baby registry: Add the correct car seat to your registry so friends or family can gift it.
  • Second-hand options: It is not recommended to use a secondhand car seat, but this may be an affordable option for some families. Always make sure:
    • The seat has never been in a severe crash
    • It’s less than six years old
    • It has no recalls
    • All parts, including the base and instruction manual, are included

When should I bring my car seat to BMC?

Add “car seat” to your hospital checklist. Bring it when you come to have your baby, or have a support person bring it at least one day before you plan to go home.
We aim to have you ready for discharge by 11:00 AM.
