Trauma and Acute Care Surgery

Injury Prevention Program

The Injury Prevention Program is located within the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery and is focused on decreasing the number of preventable injuries. Education and research as well as outreach and advocacy at the state and national levels are key components. Boston Medical Center is a member of the Trauma Survivors Network

Program priorities include:

  • Falls prevention
  • Traffic and driving safety
  • Firearm injury prevention

The team plans and leads the annual injury prevention webinar for the Massachusetts chapter of the American College of Surgeons. Recent initiatives have included partnering with the Massachusetts Medical Society to develop a program to educate clinicians on how to use extreme risk protection orders (red flag laws) to remove firearms from patients posing an imminent danger to themselves or others.
