Treatments and Services

We offer comprehensive care for adults with diabetes that is newly diagnosed, difficult to manage, or in need of long-term monitoring and follow-up, including:

Connections to other specialists to manage complications, as needed
Diabetes education for safe daily management
Inpatient adult diabetes service
Medications for diabetes, including insulin, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist medications (“GLP-1s”), and oral medications (pills)
Specialized support for gestational diabetes
Training in the use of diabetes technologies like continuous glucose monitors and insulin pumps

Treatments

Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

CGM uses a special glucose sensor connected to a tiny catheter worn discreetly under the skin that wirelessly sends sugar values to a receiver every five minutes for up to seven days. The sensor data shows sugar trends and patterns and gives the provider a detailed analysis of sugar values over a period of time. If this type of technology interests you, talk with your diabetes care team to learn if your insurance will cover it.

Gestational Diabetes Care

Patients with diabetes during pregnancy will be supported through close management during pregnancy and immediately after delivery, to reduce the risk of complications to the mother and baby. This special program is led by obstetricians and is designed for mothers who develop diabetes during pregnancy (a condition called gestational diabetes) and those women who have diabetes before they become pregnant. The visits may involve seeing an endocrinologist, dietitian, or both. Medications, meal plans and exercises will be personalized to best fit the patient’s lifestyle and blood sugar patterns.

Inpatient Diabetes Support

Clinical research has identified hyperglycemia (high blood glucose or blood sugar) as a factor that increases length of stay, hospital complications, and even inpatient mortality. The inpatient program is designed to meet current national standards for glycemic control in hospitalized patients, for those with known diabetes, and those with newly identified hyperglycemia. The team can initiate insulin therapy in the hospital if appropriate, teaching all the necessary skills for independent management. The team of endocrinologists and nurse practitioners follow patients throughout their stay. The goal of the program is to improve the transition from inpatient care to outpatient care while designing an individualized regimen.

Insulin Pumps

Insulin pumps are small computerized devices that deliver insulin doses through a flexible plastic tube called a catheter. With the aid of a small needle, the catheter is inserted through the skin and is taped in place. Doses can be delivered in a steady, continuous dose or as a surge dose around mealtime. Insulin pump therapy provides convenience and flexibility for many patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
