Diabetes

Diabetes is when the body has too much glucose (sugar) due to a disruption in insulin that comes from the pancreas. Insulin regulates the glucose, which is a major source of energy for cells that make up muscles and other tissues, and also feeds brain function. There are different types of diabetes – type 1 (most serious and chronic), type 2 (also chronic), prediabetes (abnormal blood sugar levels), and gestational (affects women who are pregnant). With careful management of medication, diet and exercise, diabetes can be controlled.

Insulin Resistance

Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that regulates glucose (sugar) in the blood. Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s cells don’t react normally to insulin, resulting in high blood sugar and often, type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance commonly exists with obesity; other risk factors include poor diet and not getting enough exercise.

Type 1 Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the pancreas makes very little or no insulin, the hormone responsible for transporting glucose (sugar) to cells for energy. This leaves too much sugar in the blood, which has both short and long term affects on overall health. Type 1 usually begins in children but can happen any time, with symptoms including thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and blurred vision. There is no cure, but there is management of symptoms through monitoring, insulin and medication, diet, and exercise.

Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when there is too little insulin, the hormone that helps glucose (sugar) get to cells for energy, or when the body resists the absorption of insulin. Type 2 generally affects adults, though more children are being affected seemingly due to lifestyle. Symptoms, like fatigue, weight loss, extreme thirst and hunger can sometimes be managed with diet and exercise, as obesity and inactivity seem to be risk factors.
