What is Polyhydramnios (Too Much Amniotic Fluid)?

Polyhydramnios means there is more amniotic fluid (water) than there should be around your baby.

Your baby is surrounded by amniotic fluid during pregnancy. A healthy amount of fluid protects and supports the baby, but too much fluid can sometimes be a sign of pregnancy or health problems.

How Common is Polyhydramnios?

Polyhydramnios is not very common:

  • It happens in about one percent of pregnancies.
  • It may be because of health problems before or during pregnancy.

How Will I Know if I Have Polyhydramnios?

Your amniotic fluid will be measured during an ultrasound, and we’ll tell you if it’s too high.

If you have pregnancy or other health concerns, your fluid may be measured more often.

What Are the Signs of Polyhydramnios?

Many people will not notice any signs. If you do have signs, they may include:

  • You may feel your belly is very large or growing quickly.
  • You may feel more tightness in your belly.
  • Your provider may notice your belly is measuring larger than expected.

What Will Happen If I Have Polyhydramnios?

You may need more frequent ultrasounds and close monitoring during pregnancy.

Sometimes your fluid levels will become normal on their own. But if your fluid is very high, we may recommend a treatment or inducing labor.

What Should I Do If I Am Told I Have Polyhydramnios?

This can sound worrying, but many people with polyhydramnios have healthy pregnancies and babies. Ask questions to learn what is best for you and your baby.
