Most pregnant people who get COVID-19 have mild illness. But about one in 10 may become very sick, especially if they have other health conditions.
COVID during pregnancy—especially if moderate or severe—can increase the risk of early birth or stillbirth.

What Are the Signs of COVID?
Call your provider right away if you have a fever or any of these symptoms:
- Fever
- Cough
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Loss of taste or smell
- Shortness of breath
- Feeling very tired
Any fever or infection can be harmful during pregnancy—don’t wait to get help.
How Can I Stay Healthy?
- Get the COVID vaccine. It’s safe at any time in pregnancy.
- Wash your hands often.
- Stay away from people who are sick.
What If I Get Sick?
- Call your provider right away.
- Take a COVID test (at home or in a clinic).
- Ask about treatment. Medicines like Paxlovid are safe during pregnancy.
- Drink water and stay hydrated.
- Get plenty of rest.
The Good News
Most pregnant people with COVID recover fully and go on to have healthy pregnancies and births. However, there are risks, so it’s important to protect yourself and get help early if you feel sick.
