Your Care and Rights During Pregnancy and Birth

You deserve care that is safe, kind, and respectful. We want you to feel seen, heard, and supported during your pregnancy and birth. These rights help guide your care and can help you and your support people advocate for what you need.

What does good maternity care look like? Watch this video to see some examples of what you should expect in your care.

You should expect...

  • To be treated with respect at all times
  • Care that is free of racism, bias, and discrimination
  • Care that supports your preferences and your personal, cultural, and religious beliefs
  • Clear information about your body, your baby, and your care
  • To ask questions and get answers that you can understand
  • To make choices about your care, including saying yes or no
  • Comfort and support, including having a support person with you
  • To feel safe and speak up if something feels wrong
  • Privacy during exams and procedures
  • To get help if you feel unheard or worried about your care

What Can I Do If I’m Not Being Treated the Way I Should Be?

Speak Up

You know your body best. If something does not feel right, it is okay to speak up.
Try one of these phrases:

  • “I am not comfortable with this.”
  • “Can you explain that in a different way?”
  • “I need a moment to think.”
  • “Is there another option?”
  • “Do you think this conversation is going in the right direction?”
  • “Can I talk with another member of the team?”
  • “Can my preferences be written down in my medical record?”

Be Involved

  • Share what matters to you.
  • Ask questions anytime.
  • Repeat back what you heard.
  • Keep a list of questions.
  • Bring a support person.
  • Tell your team when something feels off.
  • Ask another provider if you are not getting the care you want.
