Your Pregnancy, Your Way: Meet the Prenatal Care Team
During pregnancy, you will have a team of people who care for you and your baby. Everyone has a different role, and they all work together to help you have a healthy pregnancy and birth.
You may have a midwife, an obstetrician, or a maternal–fetal medicine (MFM) doctor as your pregnancy care provider. Who you see may depend on your health, your baby’s health, and your birth plan.
Midwives
Midwives are experts in healthy pregnancy and birth. They offer individual visits or CenteringPregnancy group prenatal visits. They give support, answer questions, and help you feel confident and cared for. They take care of you during pregnancy and birth.
Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants
Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are trained to care for you during pregnancy. They monitor your health and your baby’s health, answer your questions, and provide support. They work with midwives and doctors to make sure you get the care that’s right for you.
Family Medicine Doctors
Family medicine doctors care for people at all stages of life, including during pregnancy. They give checkups, answer questions, and help you stay healthy. Some family medicine doctors deliver babies and perform Cesarean (C-section) births if needed. They can provide care after the baby is born.
Obstetricians
Obstetricians are doctors who are experts in pregnancy and birth. They care for people with healthy and high-risk pregnancies. They can help if you need special medical care or a C-section.
