Caring for Your Mouth While Expecting

Pregnancy can affect your teeth and gums, but taking care of your mouth is an important part of staying healthy for both you and your baby. Healthy teeth and gums support your baby’s growth and overall wellbeing. Good dental care during pregnancy can also help prevent infections and support a safe, healthy delivery.

What You Might Notice

Pregnancy hormones can cause changes in your mouth, including:

  • Gums that bleed more easily
  • Increased plaque or sensitivity

These changes are common, but it’s still important to keep your mouth clean and watch for signs of problems.

Is Dental Care Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes. Most routine and urgent dental care is safe while you’re pregnant, including:

  • Cleanings and fillings
  • X-rays, when using a belly and neck shield
  • Numbing medicine for dental work

Just be sure to tell your dentist that you're pregnant.

Daily Dental Care Tips

During pregnancy:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss once a day.
  • Drink water throughout the day.
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks.

If You Have Nausea or Vomiting

Morning sickness can affect your teeth by exposing them to stomach acid. To protect your teeth:

  1. Rinse your mouth with a mix of one cup of water + one teaspoon of baking soda.
  2. Wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth.

This helps protect the enamel on your teeth from acid wear.

Watch for Signs of a Problem

Call your dentist if you notice:

  • Red or sore gums
  • Tooth pain or sensitivity
  • A bad taste, pus, or swelling in your face or jaw
  • Fever with mouth pain
