Congratulations to Ann Horner, RN, BSN winner of Boston Medical Center’s 5th annual “Nominate a Nurse” contest!

“Ann is one of the most patient and caring nurse's I have ever worked with,” wrote Kelsey Gilbride, RN, BSN, CMSRN, Ann’s colleague on Menino 7 West.  “She has such a wonderful heart of gold and always comes into work with a smile on her face and goes above and beyond with her care every single shift.”

Ann was surprised with flowers and a card containing Kelsey’s nomination, in honor of National Nurses Week. Each year, Nurses Week recognizes the incredible contributions made by nurses. Nurses Week takes place from May 6 through May 12, which is also the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is considered the founder of modern nursing.

“For example, a patient who suffered a stroke developed right sided weakness and expressive aphasia (trouble communicating his words) who used to enjoy frequent ballroom dancing with his wife. While Ann was not the nurse for this patient that day, I walked in and saw her holding him up, dancing with him in his room and singing a favorite oldies song. I looked at my patients face and saw him smiling, something I really had not seen him do so before. He finally had a sense of "relief" while being in the hospital and it looked like a weight was slightly lifted off of his shoulders.”

“That is just one small moment that can mean so much to someone and she constantly goes above and beyond in delivering that exceptional care to her patients. She sees the person for who they are, and immediately tries to get to know them, making sure to make the patient feel as comfortable as possible. I cannot say enough kind things about Ann. She is always there for her co-workers and no matter what task she is dealt with she does it with the best patience and care. She is truly a wonderful nurse and friend and I am honored to work with her.”

BMC is proud to celebrate the role our nurses play in delivering the highest level of quality care to our patients. This year, we received a variety of nominations submitted by BMC patients and staff, explaining why their favorite nurse should be chosen! Each nominated nurse will be notified that words of praise were submitted on their behalf. Our nursing staff provides care for countless patients and families, offering the highest levels of comfort during their time here at BMC.

Thanks to all who participated in this year’s contest, and congratulations again to Ann!
