BOSTON – On May 9, Boston Medical Center (BMC) hosted its largest annual fundraising event – Seasons 2026, raising more than $3.4 million in flexible funds to support the hospital’s greatest needs. This year’s event celebrated the 30th anniversary of the merger between Boston City Hospital and Boston University Medical Center in 1996 that created BMC. More than 400 people came together at The Westin Boston Seaport District to reflect on all BMC has achieved, recognize the work ahead, and honor the people who make it possible.
The event also honored three leaders and organizations that have played key roles in BMC’s growth and positioned the organization for the future:
- Martha Samuelson, former Chair of the BMC Board of Trustees and emeritus board member, has dedicated nearly two decades to BMC, providing strategic guidance and ongoing partnership, championing initiatives that expand access to care and strengthen nursing, research, and community programs.
- Richard Slifka (in memoriam), former BMC board member, served as a patron and patient of BMC, providing business expertise and reinforcing a culture centered on compassion and equity. His support was instrumental in the “Building the New BMC” campaign, and the Richard B. Slifka Chief of Neurology position honors his commitment to care.
- Takeda, a longstanding partner of BMC, supports community health initiatives both locally and at scale – including a first-of-its kind collaboration to address greenhouse gas emissions hotspots in healthcare and a multi-year investment in the BMC Health Equity Accelerator.
“We are grateful to celebrate this 30-year milestone and honor some of the leaders who have been instrumental in supporting our mission,” said Tony Hollenberg, MD, President of BMC and System Chief Physician Executive.
The event was generously supported by sponsors, including presenting sponsor Global Partners and founding sponsor Ocean State Job Lot. Guests enjoyed video remarks from former Ohio U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and was emceed by former New England Patriots and sports analysts Devin and Jason McCourty.
“BMC has always been more than just a great hospital. It’s a place where people are treated with dignity, where innovation meets compassion, and where access is a priority,” said Governor Healey.
During the event, Martha Samuelson reflected on her nearly two decades of work supporting the essential hospital.
“My first visit to BMC opened my eyes to how many people lack access to quality health care. From that moment, I was committed. Over the years, I've watched this institution meet every challenge with its mission intact, including COVID, when we made some of the hardest decisions that I've ever been part of,” said Samuelson. “We saved lives. It has been an honor to support BMC and the communities it serves.”
