Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is an inflammatory condition of the inner ear. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks cells in the inner ear that are mistaken for a virus or bacteria. AIED is a rare disease occurring in less than one percent of the 28 million Americans with a hearing loss.

Back and neck injuries are the most common musculoskeletal problems. In fact, 80 percent of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Pain occurs when the spine, a complex structure of vertebra, disks, the spinal cord, and nerves, is abnormal.

Back pain, particularly in the lower (lumbar) area of the spine, is a common medical condition. Pain in the back can caused by many things, from injury to a muscle or ligament, to serious injuries to the spine, illnesses like fibromyalgia and kidney disease, the strain of pregnancy, and more. Most back pain goes away on its own in four to six weeks, but seek medical help if severe pain comes on suddenly, spreads down the legs and causes weakness and numbness, or is accompanied by fever.

The brain, inner ear, muscles, joints, central nervous system, senses and blood vessels/heart all work together for normal balance. These links are called the vestibular system. Sometimes a disease or injury can damage this system causing dizziness, vertigo, trouble with walking or balancing, and sometimes difficulty with hearing and vision

Ballism is a rare symptom of some neurological disorders, strokes, or tumors. It causes violent, uncontrollable motions on one side of your body, usually in your arm and shoulder.

Barrett’s Esophagus (BE) is a complication of chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The normal valve between the esophagus and stomach is incompetent and stomach fluid causes changes in the type of cells in the esophagus.

Bell’s palsy occurs when the facial nerve is damaged by pressure or swelling and does not work properly, resulting in paralysis (weakness) and distortions of the face.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or BPPV (commonly known as “having rocks in the head”) is the most common inner ear problem and cause of vertigo, or false sense of spinning.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition in which the prostate enlarges as men age. More than 70 percent of men over the age of 60 have urinary symptoms attributable to BPH.

Attached to the bicep muscle is the bicep tendon, which runs from the elbow to shoulder. A tear of the bicep tendon can occur, with symptoms ranging from a gradual or sharp, sudden pain in the upper arm, bruising, tenderness, immobility, or weakness. This tear can occur in the shoulder or the elbow. Injury and overuse of the shoulders and arms are the main causes of a tendon rupture. Common risk factors include age, lifting weights that are too heavy, shoulder overuse, smoking, and corticosteroid medications.

Bile duct cancer is rare. It can happen in the parts of the bile ducts that are outside or inside the liver. Cancer of the bile duct outside of the liver is much more common.

A bile duct stricture is a narrowing of the bile duct, which connects the liver to the intestine and drains bile (digestive fluid from the liver). A stricture can be caused by different diseases or injury (surgical) to the bile ducts, and it is usually treated with a stint to open the obstruction and help the bile drain.

Bile, a substance that aids the digestion and absorption of fats, is carried from the liver by the bile ducts. The gallbladder stores the bile between meals and empties it back into the bile duct, once food is consumed.

Once known as manic depression, bipolar disorder is characterized by extreme mood swings that fluctuate between emotional highs and lows. An individual with bipolar disorder may feel energized and euphoric, and then shift to hopelessness and depression. Most individuals with bipolar disorders feel much more like themselves with treatment plans that often include medications and counseling.

Bladder cancer happens in the tissues of the bladder, the organ that holds urine. There are three types of bladder cancer: transitional cell carcinoma, the most common bladder cancer type, which begins in the transitional cells in the inner layer of the bladder; squamous cell carcinoma, a rare cancer triggered when squamous cells form in the bladder after a long-term infection or irritation; and adenocarcinoma, another rare cancer that starts when glandular cells form in the bladder after long-lasting bladder inflammation and irritation.

Blood in the stool can signal colon conditions like cancer or polyps, where a few streaks of blood on toilet paper most likely means hemorrhoids or a scratch in the rectal area. Stool will become noticeably dark or even deep red when blood is present.

Bloody emesis (vomiting) in children can be caused by many things – a milk allergy, birth defect, a swallowed object, different cancers and many other conditions. Immediate medical attention should be sought to diagnosis the cause.

Blurred (fuzzy) vision in one or both eyes can be a symptom of many conditions, from cataracts to glaucoma to stroke to migraine. Blurred vision can occur gradually over time or quickly; any sudden change in eyesight requires immediate medical attention.
