The BMC GME URiM Cohort Mentorship Program is designed to provide a supportive community for interns who self-identify as underrepresented minorities in medicine (URiM). Our mentors volunteer to help each mentee develop a sense of cross program community while enhancing their overall learning experience. We hope to achieve these goals through events (social and educational) geared toward building and cementing cross program relationships, promoting good physical and mental wellness.
The structure is that of mentorship through cohorts. Each cohort consist of 2-3 mentors and 4-5 mentees.
Guidelines for Mentees
As a mentee we hope you will become comfortable enough to disclose some of your most personal fears, feelings and thoughts. This is not an easy thing to do, much less with someone new to you. Your mentor(s) is someone who is a trainee like you, someone who has most likely recently faced the challenges you are about to face. We hope that you see your mentor(s) as not only as a support system but also as person from whom you can learn.
- Recognize your mentor(s) and cohorts as a resource for support and guidance for topics varying from though not limited to, transitioning to residency, living in Boston and navigating challenges associated with being a URiM. (ex: micro/macro aggressions, imposter syndrome, discrimination).
- Learn about and have access to resources for addressing and processing challenges.
- Have the opportunity to participate in educational events that focus on good mental health and wellness among residents.
