Ways Your Support Person Can Help

Being There: Support After the Birth

What does support look like after the birth? After the baby comes, you may need extra support. It’s hard work learning to care for your new baby.

Ways Support People Can Help After Birth

  • Offer words of encouragement.
  • Help with sleep! They can take the baby so you can take a nap.
  • Cook meals or bring something to eat.
  • Wash and fold laundry.
  • Clean the dishes.
  • Help with other kids in the family. Children need lots of love and support when a new baby joins the family.
  • Hold, bathe, or change the baby.
  • Support breastfeeding, like saying you are doing a good job or getting you a snack and a glass of water when you’re breastfeeding.
  • If you’re using bottles, take turns feeding.
  • Go to the baby’s provider visits and ask questions.
  • Be understanding. Having a new baby can be stressful and tiring.

Paid Family Medical Leave

Partners or family members may be eligible to take a paid family medical leave to offer support and bond after the baby is born. Learn more about Massachusetts paid family medical leave.
