What to Expect After You Go Home

Your baby’s health and growth should be closely monitored throughout their first year. Even if your baby seems totally healthy, regular check-ups help your care team track development, answer your questions, and give your baby the vaccines they need to stay healthy.

Routine Visits and Vaccines

Most babies are seen several times during their first year of life. Your child may need additional visits based on their health or development—your provider will let you know if that’s needed.

In most cases, healthy babies should be seen for a “well-child” visit at the following ages:

  • One week
  • Two weeks
  • One month
  • Two months
  • Four months
  • Six months
  • Nine months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • Two years

Vaccines help protect babies and children from serious illness. During some of your baby’s check-ups, they may receive one or more vaccines, usually via a shot in the upper leg (thigh).
