Attention Disorders

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic mental health condition that makes it challenging for children and adults to focus on tasks, pay attention, control impulsive behavior and even to sit still. These challenges often prevent children from functioning well in school and getting along with family members at home. Symptoms of hyperactive or impulsive ADHD include fidgeting or squirming, trouble playing quietly and excessive talking and interrupting. Symptoms of inattentive ADHD are making careless mistakes, being easily distracted, difficulty following instructions and forgetfulness.

Autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of disorders that affect communication and interaction (autism, Asperger’s syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, and childhood disintegrative disorder). Four times as many boys as girls are diagnosed, and while there is no one cause, genetic and environmental factors together are thought to play a role.

Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a virus that causes liver inflammation, passed through exposure to blood from an infected person. Symptoms, including jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), fatigue, and stomach pain, may not be present and the infection may remain undetected. Years after the infection has caused permanent liver damage, symptoms might include bleeding easily, confusion, leg swelling, and more.

Hepatitis Management and Treatment

As part of a special program within the Infectious Diseases Clinic, infants and children with Hepatitis B and C are followed. Recent NICHD Funding has allowed the clinical program to focus on the risk factors for transmission of HCV from mother to infant. There is an active program to identify, evaluate, and manage congenital Hepatitis C, and have access to state of the art diagnostics and therapeutics.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are passed from person to person through sexual contact. Often there are no symptoms, so an infected person may not know they are putting others at risk for an STD. Examples of STDs include bacterial infections like gonorrhea and syphilis and viral infections like HPV (human papillomavirus) and HIV.
