The thyroid is a gland at the base of the neck that produces hormones that control the body’s metabolism (rate it uses energy). There are two types of thyroid disease and many different causes. Hyperthyroidism means the thyroid makes too much hormone, and symptoms include irritability/nervousness and weight loss. Hypothyroidism happens when there is not enough hormone produced, with symptoms including fatigue and weight gain.
