Rectocele, or posterior prolapse, occurs when the vagina bulges into the rectum due to the weakening of the thin wall of tissue (fascia) that separates them. Childbirth is one cause of rectocele; a small prolapse may have no symptoms, and a large prolapse may be uncomfortable but rarely painful.
