George Tolis, Jr., MD, is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Boston Medical Center – Brighton (BMC Brighton) and Chief of Cardiac Surgery for BMC Health System. He is also an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine.

Dr. Tolis holds undergraduate and Master of Science degrees in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed an internship and general surgery residency training at Massachusetts General Hospital. He subsequently completed fellowships in cardiothoracic surgery at Yale–New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, and in advanced aortic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City under the direction of Dr. Randall Griepp.

Dr. Tolis has more than 20 years of experience. He began his career at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, where he served as Director of the Aortic Surgery Center, before being recruited to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center (now BMC Brighton) as Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. In 2015, Dr. Tolis joined Partners Healthcare (now Mass General Brigham), where he served most recently as Section Chief of Coronary and General Cardiac Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Network Director of Cardiac Surgery.

Dr. Tolis’ clinical interests include multiarterial coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and coronary endarterectomy; surgery for endocarditis; aortic root and arch surgery; complex reoperations; and surgery to address complications from percutaneous devices such coronary stents, percutaneous valves, and implants.
