Hemorrhoids are swollen, inflamed veins around the lower rectum or anus, either inside the anus or under the skin. Also called piles, hemorrhoids are common in both men and women, and often result from straining to have a bowel movement. Other causes include pregnancy, aging and chronic constipation or diarrhea.
