- Pediatric Playspace Volunteer: Pediatric Playspace volunteers spend time with patients and their families in the primary and specialty clinics leading leading art and craft projects to promote creativity and choice, reading with patients to ease their wait, and playing games to help normalize the medical environment. Volunteers have a set 3 hour weekly shift between 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Minimum 4 month commitment required.
- Pediatric Emergency Department Volunteer: Pediatric ED volunteers provide activities to patients and families to ease wait time and normalize the environment during emergency department visits. Interactions may include; playing board games or UNO bedside, leading group art activities in the waiting area, taking on a WAR match with a bored teenager and coloring dinosaurs and princesses with a patient’s siblings. As the ED is typically busier later in the day, a 3hr weekly shift commitment between the hours of 2:00 PM - 8:00 PM is preferred.
- Pediatric Inpatient Care Areas: Volunteer’s role is to facilitate a more positive hospitalization experience for children through developmentally appropriate play. Interactions may include reading with/to a child, playing board games, creating craft activities, talking, listening, watching movies/TV, playing video games, etc. Interactions should occur either in the playroom, adolescent room, or at bedside based on daily needs. Volunteers have a set 3hr weekly shift between 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
The Child Life Program at Boston Medical Center will be collaborating with the Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development and the students in pursuit of a Master of Science in Child Life and Family Centered Care.
