La adicción a las drogas, también llamada trastorno por uso de sustancias, es una enfermedad que afecta el cerebro y el comportamiento de una persona y conduce a la incapacidad de controlar el uso de una droga o medicamento legal o ilegal. Sustancias como el alcohol, la marihuana y la nicotina también se consideran drogas. Cuando eres adicto, puedes continuar usando la droga a pesar del daño que causa.

Existen medicamentos eficaces y aprobados por la FDA para tratar algunos trastornos por consumo de sustancias, en particular los trastornos por consumo de opioides, el trastorno por consumo de tabaco y el trastorno por consumo de alcohol. Se ha comprobado que la terapia y el tratamiento de salud conductual tratan los trastornos por uso de sustancias y, a menudo, se combinan con medicamentos.

Los proveedores están capacitados para iniciar el tratamiento con Suboxone, Naltrexone y Vivitrol, y organizan visitas grupales semanales donde los pacientes que toman Suboxone pueden reunirse con un médico y un especialista en salud conductual para analizar la terapia de mantenimiento a largo plazo.
