She is also Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery, Dr. Abdeen is known for her expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques, including partial knee replacement and direct anterior approach total hip replacement. She treats a wide range of conditions, including hip and knee arthritis, hip dysplasia, osteonecrosis/avascular necrosis (AVN), painful or failed prior joint replacements, and hip fractures.

As Chief of Arthroplasty, Dr. Abdeen introduced minimally invasive robotic surgery to BMC Orthopedic Surgery and developed the shared decisionmaking model—a set of multilingual tools that enable patients to customize their treatment based on their individual needs. She is a strong advocate for health equity, considering social, financial, and life circumstances to ensure the best clinical outcomes for her patients. Dr. Abdeen also developed the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program, which fast-tracks rehabilitation for underserved patients. Her research focuses on improving outcomes following hip and knee replacement surgery, with several quality improvement projects currently targeting infection rates, blood clots, and pain management.

Dr. Abdeen is one of the few female orthopedic surgeons in the country (fewer than 10 percent) and advocates for greater representation in the field. She has received numerous honors in her area of expertise and is committed to restoring physical function and improving quality of life for her patients.
