Environment is intrinsic to our health. With our innovative sustainability initiatives, we are addressing root causes of poor health.
That includes initiatives such as our rooftop farms, which reduce our carbon footprint, improve patient nutrition, strengthen local food systems, reduce food waste, and increase access to fresh produce for our community. It also includes environmental justice initiatives that help dismantle structural barriers and help communities thrive long term.
Environmental Initiatives
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in healthcare account for approximately 8.5 percent of the nation’s overall emissions. As many of the communities BMCHS serves are in areas disproportionately affected by climate change, these emissions pose significant health and safety threats for our patients.
Reducing our GHG emissions and working towards carbon neutrality allows us to positively impact the health of our communities, as well as save money that we reinvest into patient care.
Collaborating for Change
First-of-Its-Kind Collaboration Aimed at Reducing Supply Chain GHG Emissions
As a pharmaceutical supplier to BMC, Takeda contributes to upstream emissions within BMC's supply chain; conversely, as an end-user and dispenser of pharmaceutical products, BMC influences Takeda's downstream emissions through its waste management procedures.
Clean Power Prescription
This first-in-the-nation program enables BMC providers to identify eligible patients in need and reduce their utility bill using renewable energy, powered by solar panels installed at BMC.

Robert Biggio, SVP and chief sustainability & real estate officer, was recognized by the City of Boston as a 2026 Boston Climate Leader in the “Energy” category for pioneering a national model for sustainable healthcare.
Anna Goldman, MD, Named a Boston Climate Leader
Anna Goldman, MD, medical director of sustainability, received the 2025 Boston Bright Future Award in the Individual Category from the City of Boston for her work in launching the Clean Power Prescription Program.
