Our approach to addiction treatment is informed by Boston Medical Center’s Stimulant Treatment and Recovery Team/Office-Based Addiction Treatment (START/OBAT) Program, a pioneering initiative that delivers compassionate, comprehensive care to individuals facing substance use disorders.

Rooted in the innovative Massachusetts Model, the program integrates addiction treatment into the primary care setting, removing barriers to access and reducing the stigma surrounding addiction. Using a team-based care model, physicians collaborate closely with nurse care managers to provide personalized treatment that goes beyond addressing substance use. It incorporates support for the medical, psychological, and social challenges that often accompany addiction.

Through START/OBAT, we reaffirm our commitment to whole-person care—making recovery accessible, respectful, and deeply connected to the ongoing health needs of our patients.

Key elements of the program:

  • A team-based care model with close collaboration between physicians and nurse care managers
  • Access to individual and group counseling
  • Comprehensive health education and recovery resources
  • Assistance with navigating medical, social, and emotional challenges
  • Long-term support focused on whole-person wellness and community reintegration

Through the START/OBAT Program, we are committed to changing lives one patient at a time, offering hope and healing for those impacted by addiction.

At Family Medicine Melnea Cass, our Integrative Behavioral Health (IBH) program is a cornerstone of comprehensive mental health care. This innovative model merges psychiatric expertise with therapeutic counseling, offering a holistic approach to behavioral wellness that addresses both immediate concerns and underlying causes.

The IBH program ensures personalized, continuous care by integrating:

  • Psychiatric evaluations and medication management
  • Short term counseling across the lifespan
  • Collaborative treatment planning involving primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants

Our psychiatrists and therapists work side-by-side to craft care plans that foster lasting recovery and emotional resilience. Sessions are designed to equip patients with practical coping strategies, enhance emotional well-being, and support healthy relationships.

Through this integrative model, we are changing lives, empowering our patients to pursue recovery and live with purpose.

Diabetes and Depression Group Visits

Our diabetes and depression group visits reflect a groundbreaking partnership with our Integrative Behavioral Health (IBH) colleagues. This initiative recognizes the powerful connection between chronic physical health conditions like diabetes and mental health challenges such as depression, which often coexist and significantly affect quality of life.

These group visits, facilitated by a dedicated team of nurse practitioners and therapists, unite patients with shared experiences in a compassionate, judgment-free setting. Participants benefit from peer support, open dialogue, and shared learning, fostering a sense of community that helps overcome the isolation often associated with chronic illness.

Through these integrated group visits, Family Medicine Melnea Cass is dedicated to improving both physical and emotional health, offering a meaningful path to sustained well-being.

Nursing services are a vital component of Family Medicine Melnea Cass (FMMC), delivering timely, compassionate, and efficient care that addresses both immediate and ongoing health needs. Often serving as the first point of contact in the healthcare system, our nursing team plays a central role in our commitment to whole-person wellness.

Our skilled nurses support preventive health by providing personalized treatment, emotional support, and seamless coordination across care settings in areas such as:

  • Diabetes management
  • Education and self-care guidance
  • Family planning support
  • Hypertension management
  • Immunizations
  • Integrative nursing therapies
  • Medication administration—delivery of injectable medications including vaccines and hormone therapies
  • Wound care—safe and effective treatment for minor injuries and post-surgical healing

FMMC’s nursing team exemplifies our core values of dignity, professionalism, and respect, ensuring that every patient receives the thoughtful, comprehensive care they deserve.
