The BMC Health System Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is pleased to announce the implementation of Epic Beaker AP for Anatomic Pathology, a major milestone in modernizing our laboratory information systems. This implementation is specific to Anatomic Pathology; Clinical Pathology laboratory services will not be transitioning to Epic Beaker as part of this implementation. The implementation will improve workflow, enhance interdisciplinary communication and decision-making, strengthen specimen tracking, streamline laboratory processes, expand reporting capabilities, improve charge capture, reduce denials, and strengthen integration across the Boston Medical Center Health System.

Our move to Epic Beaker AP requires participation from most clinical areas as Pathology & Laboratory Medicine comprises ~70 percent of the patient’s medical record.

This website serves as the central hub for all implementation-related information, including project updates, key milestones, training materials, workflow changes, testing and validation resources, FAQs, contact information and go-live support. All clinical personnel and project stakeholders are encouraged to visit regularly for the latest information as we prepare for successful implementation.

The transition to Epic Beaker AP represents a significant investment in the future of BMCHS Pathology, providing a modern, integrated platform that will improve operational efficiency, enhance patient care, and establish the foundation for future initiatives across our health system.

What to Expect with Epic Beaker AP

The move from CoPath to Epic Beaker AP will bring pathology workflows directly into the Epic electronic health record (EHR), creating a more connected, efficient, and patient-centered experience across the health system.

Although much of the work performed by the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine occurs behind the scenes, providers and clinical staff will notice improvements in how pathology services are ordered, tracked, communicated, and reported.

Like any major technology implementation, there will be a brief adjustment period as users become familiar with new workflows. Most organizations experience steady improvement during the first month after go-live, with workflows becoming well established within 60 to 90 days.

What Will Be Better

A Single Electronic Health Record
Pathology will be fully integrated within Epic. Providers and care teams will be able to view pathology reports alongside laboratory results, imaging, medications, clinical notes, and other patient information within a single patient record, reducing the need to access multiple systems.

Improved Order Entry
Ordering pathology specimens will become more standardized, helping improve order accuracy, ensuring more complete clinical information accompanies specimens, and reducing the need for laboratory clarification.

Better Visibility into Specimens
Providers and clinical staff will have improved visibility into where specimens are within the pathology process, resulting in better tracking from collection through final diagnosis, fewer manual phone calls to locate specimens, and enhanced patient safety.

Faster Communication
Integrated workflows improve communication between pathology and clinical teams by making pathology information more readily available within Epic and streamlining notifications and follow-up.

More Consistent Pathology Reports
Standardized templates and structured reporting improve report consistency, readability, and support quality initiatives while preserving diagnostic flexibility.

Improved Operational Performance
Enhanced reporting and dashboards help monitor turnaround times, workflow performance, quality metrics, and operational trends, supporting continuous improvement.
