The CDW for Research is a centralized resource to access data from BMC Electronic Health Records data (Epic), historical data from BMC’s legacy clinical systems, Community Health Center (CHC) data, BMC HealthNet Plan claims data, and other health system data streams. Data from many of the systems that contribute to the CDW for Research can be cross-referenced or linked using unique patient identifiers.

Data Available from the BMC CDW for Research

BMC Electronic Health Record (EHR) data are pulled from Epic. CHC data are pulled from OCHIN (a different version of Epic used by a national network of community health centers). General Rule: If it’s in Epic, it’s in the data warehouse!

In addition to data from Epic and OCHIN, the data warehouse includes data from various data systems that are no longer in active clinical use (legacy systems). These legacy systems include PICIS (operating room data), IBEX (emergency department data), SDK (patient registration data), SCM (inpatient EHR data), Logician (outpatient EHR data), and EWS/IDX (patient scheduling data). Legacy systems are not actively maintained; data from them can be cumbersome to extract and are not monitored for quality.

Data are collected and consolidated into the CDW for Research on a regular schedule, but not in real-time. In some instances, certain data elements that are visible to frontline Epic users may be generated at the point of care and may not be captured within the data warehouse. CDW for Research analysts will work with your study team to find the data necessary for analysis.
