A Notice for Potential Applicants

We have an important update regarding the BMC Health System Administrative Fellowship Program. While we remain committed to leadership development, we have decided to pause the program to realign its structure with system-wide operational and financial efforts, deepen leader engagement, and develop a concrete governance structure.

We are confident this temporary pause will enable BMC Health System to resume with a valuable and enriching program that will thrive in the years ahead.

We are excited for our current fellowship cohort to continue with the program as originally planned, and we are committed to supporting their experience. The pause impacts applicants participating in the current recruitment cycle.

We appreciate your interest in the program and encourage you to check back for updates.

Sincerely,

The BMC Health System Administrative Fellowship Program

The Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS) Inclusive Management Administrative Fellowship is a highly selective, one-year postgraduate training program that broadens the candidate’s healthcare administration knowledge and enhances their hands-on skills, with the aim of assisting them in building a successful career as a healthcare administrator.

The fellowship is semi-structured and preceptor-driven. Each fellow will have an opportunity to rotate through clinical and functional areas of the hospital, shadowing staff members to gain a direct view into their day-to-day operations. Areas include, but are not limited to, operations, human resources, finance, and quality. Senior leaders at Boston Medical Center provide formal mentorship.

Why Become a Fellow at Boston Medical Center?

Boston Medical Center (BMC) is a large nonprofit academic medical institution and safety-net hospital that was listed as one of America’s Best Large Employers by Forbes and in the top 150 places to work in healthcare by Becker’s Healthcare. In 2023, BMCHS was named #1 in the nation for racial and general inclusivity.

BMC is a founding partner of the Boston Medical Center Health System (BMCHS), which provides world-class care to all, with an emphasis on health equity, clinical and research excellence, and the treatment of complex conditions through a value-based, coordinated continuum of care. BMCHS includes BMC and five other major entities serving patients and health plan members in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Example Projects

Fellows work on a wide range of projects across hospital and health system. A few examples of potential projects include:

  • Identifying hospital growth opportunities (e.g. radiology, infusion, SNFs)
  • Responding to a state RFP to provide respite services
  • Designing a program to improve behavioral health quality measures (ACOs, e.g.)
  • Implementing a new care management program focused on reducing unnecessary medical expense
  • Project management and implementation of new systems
  • Process improvement of operational workflows
  • Interim management of units

Professional Support and Mentorship

Each fellow will be paired with a senior leader (VP or higher) who will serve as their mentor throughout the program. Fellows will meet with their mentors to discuss their overall career goals and learning objectives for the fellowship. Additionally, the mentor will meet regularly with fellows to discuss project progress, provide coaching and feedback, and answer questions about BMC and healthcare administration more broadly.

Beyond the Fellowship

Permanent employment is not guaranteed after completion of the fellowship, but we strongly encourage fellows to apply to full-time positions at BMC. The aim of the program is to train and develop individuals to be prepared to undertake leadership roles within BMC. Fellows are encouraged to discuss their career path with their mentor and apply for open positions in the final months.
