Overview
Strategic Research Growth (SRG) accelerates the growth of research at BMC by partnering with investigators to craft compelling research proposals responsive to funder priorities. SRG helps teams and individual researchers amplify their research by becoming more effective grant writers. SRG activates and leads teams around emerging research opportunities, many of which are large-scale and span scientific disciplines, clinical and administrative departments, and institutions.
We offer a continuum of proposal development services for government grants and foundation-funded research proposals. The support we provide ranges from identifying, vetting, and disseminating funding opportunities; to fostering intra- and inter-institutional collaboration, linking investigators to key institutional resources, and providing sophisticated project management support for large, complex proposals. SRG partners with investigators on all facets of proposal development, from idea generation to submission, with a special emphasis on helping investigators navigate the institutional landscape to ensure BMC research is designed to succeed.
Who We Support
Strategic Research Growth (SRG) is tasked with growing BMC's research portfolio and supporting faculty (with a rank of Assistant Professor or higher) and accomplished postdocs who will be remaining at BMC. SRG is happy to work with fellows who have a confirmed faculty appointment (Assistant Professor or higher) at Boston University. We are not able to work on medical student- or resident-led grant applications, or on applications led by clinical faculty. Grant seekers may submit applications through BMC without SRG.
We work with investigators who submit their grants through Boston Medical Center, according to the PI Home Institution Finder, which defines an investigator’s home institution. Please visit the PI Home Institution Finder to confirm your home institution: https://wwwapp.bumc.bu.edu/PI_Home_Institution/
What We Support
SRG supports Project Directors and Principal Investigators across the institution in their pursuit of all governmental grant funding, regardless of whether the project is programmatic or research. We also assist investigators with research proposals to private funders.
SRG works to secure extramural funding for BMC; as such, we do not work on NIH Loan Repayment Applications or internal BMC or BU funding opportunities.
Working with Us
Strategic Research Growth’s (SRG) ability to support proposal development is driven by capacity. While SRG would like to offer tailored help to everyone who seeks it, we prioritize honoring commitments we have made to investigators with whom we have been working for weeks, if not months. To receive as much SRG support as possible, investigators are encouraged to fill out the External Funding Request intake form (here) as soon as they decide to apply for a grant. For full proposals where BMC is the prime, we recommend requesting SRG services at least 3 months in advance. For some applications, (i.e., multicomponent applications, training grants, and large PCORI awards), we recommend investigators request services even earlier. SRG capacity to support a proposal is not dictated solely by volume; the complexity of proposals, the experience and support needs of the study team, the number of external collaborators, and RFA-specific requirements impact bandwidth.
Before SRG begins proposal development work with a PI, we request approval from research leadership within the PI’s department.
