Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects the lungs and right side of the heart. It begins when tiny arteries in the lungs become narrowed or blocked, causing the right ventricle in the heart to pump harder. It is a serious, progressive disease with no cure.

Types of pulmonary hypertension include:

  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension
  • Pulmonary hypertension due to cardiac disease
  • Pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis, chronic obstructive lung disease
  • Pulmonary hypertension associated with sickle cell disease or thalassemia
  • Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension

The Pulmonary Hypertension Center provides special expertise in the diagnosis and management of patients with primary and secondary forms of pulmonary hypertension (PH). The team’s specialists are dedicated to improving the quality of life for patients with pulmonary hypertension through individualized management and use of the most advanced medications, including medications that are only available through clinical trials.
