Spina bifida that is present at birth usually requires surgery within 72 hours. During the surgery, a surgeon puts the spinal cord and exposed tissue inside the baby's body and covers them with muscle and skin. Then they close the opening in the back.
Additional surgeries may be needed later for complications such as bladder and bowel issues and hydrocephalus.
