Diabetes

Diabetes is when the body has too much glucose (sugar) due to a disruption in insulin that comes from the pancreas. Insulin regulates the glucose, which is a major source of energy for cells that make up muscles and other tissues, and also feeds brain function. There are different types of diabetes - type 1 (most serious and chronic), type 2 (also chronic), prediabetes (abnormal blood sugar levels), and gestational (affects women who are pregnant). With careful management of medication, diet and exercise, diabetes can be controlled.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

What is Gastroesophageal Reflux? When you normally swallow, food and drink travel down your esophagus and into your stomach, after passing through the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which is the normal anatomic valve between the esophagus and stomach. The LES relaxes to allow food and liquid to pass into the stomach. The normal LES then tightens again to minimize reflux of fluid and food into the esophagus from the stomach. When the valve or LES is incompetent, GERD develops.
