Boston Medical Center’s Public Health Clinic, also known as the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Clinic, provides low-cost counseling, screening, and treatment of STDs. Our confidential services are provided by STD specialists.
Please note that we have recently made some important changes to the policies and procedures in the Public Health/STD Clinic at Boston Medical Center. Due to Massachusetts Department of Public Health budget cuts, we are no longer able to provide free STD services. Please see the section below regarding insurance and payment options.
What Services are Available in the Clinic?
- Evaluation and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, including Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, genital warts-Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Molluscum, scabies, and vaginitis.
- Counseling and rapid testing for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.
- Information and handouts regarding sexually transmitted infections, partner notification, and safer sex practices.
- Hepatitis A and B vaccines. Referrals for free hepatitis testing are available.
- If you are experiencing symptoms, e.g., itching, burning, or sores, please visit our Public Health/STD Clinic for an exam and treatment.

What if I don't have any symptoms?
If you are not experiencing symptoms, free walk-in testing is available at Project TRUST. Project TRUST services are conveniently located at 721 Massachusetts Avenue, next to the bus stop. To learn more about these services please visit them on the web Project TRUST or call 617-414-4495.
How are the tests performed?
For women, a full genital exam, including a pelvic speculum exam, may be performed in order to test for:
- Gonorrhea
- Chlamydia
- Trichomonas
- Yeast Infection
- Bacterial Vaginosis
- Pregnancy
For men, a full genital exam and urine test/swab may be performed in order to test for:

- Blood Test for Syphilis
- Rapid HIV Test (results in 20 minutes)
- Visual Diagnosis of:
- Molluscum Contagiosum
- Genital Warts (HSV)
- Genital Herpes
- Scabies
How do I find out my results?
All test results, except for HIV, are available by phone.
The following test results are available at the time of your clinic visit:
- Bacterial Vaginosis
- Trichomonas
- Vaginal Candida (Yeast)
- Genital Warts
- Genital Herpes
- Molluscum Contagiosum
What Else Should I Know Before Visiting
the Clinic?
Although there are a limited number of walk-in slots available, you are encouraged to schedule an appointment ahead of time in order to ensure that you are seen in the clinic. You may call the front desk to schedule this appointment.

Tuesday: 8:00am-11:00am; 1:00pm-4:00pm
Wednesday: 1:00pm-7:00pm
Thursday: 1:00pm-4:00pm
Friday: 8:00am-11:00am
The clinic is closed on weekends and major holidays.

To register to be seen at the clinic, patients are required to provide:
- First and last name
- Date of birth
- Full address
- Telephone number
- Health insurance
Patients need to register at the front desk of the Public Health Clinic. This information is confidential. There is no anonymous testing provided in our clinic.

Interpreter services for other languages are available by phone. On-site interpreters should be scheduled. Please advise the front desk if you will need the services of an interpreter.
How can I pay for STD Services?
As a result of recent state budget cuts, we are no longer able to provide STD services free of charge. If you do not have health insurance or do not want to use your health insurance, we are willing to help you pay for your initial basic screening visit by offering a discounted rate. What can I do if I do not have health insurance?
If you do not have health insurance, Patient Financial Services’ staff is available to assist you. You may call 617-414-5155 to schedule an appointment or speak to a staff member. You may also walk-in to any of the office locations.

Directions to the Clinic
The Public Health/STD Clinic is located in the Center for Infectious Diseases on the Ground Floor of the Dowling Building. There is no direct access to the Dowling Building from the street. Please enter through the Yawkey Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) or the Menino Emergency Room.
- Yawkey ACC Building (850 Harrison Avenue): Follow the arrows on the wall and ceiling to the Dowling Building. Pass Urgent Care on the right; down the ramp toward the elevators. The clinic will be on your right, before the elevators. Enter through the door that reads Center for Infectious Diseases, where you will register to be seen.
- Menino Emergency Room (Albany Street): Follow the arrows on the wall and ceiling to the Dowling Building. Pass the sliding doors, turn immediately to the left, past the door, down the stairs, and turn right. Pass the elevators to your left, and enter through the door that reads Center for Infectious Diseases, where you will register to be seen.
