When psychiatrist Dr. David Henderson came to Boston Medical Center, he inherited patients from across the world. One of his patients, who is from Liberia, said he trusts Dr. Henderson because “he understands my culture and talks to me like he’s from my culture.” That cultural sensitivity is pivotal in advancing mental health care.
It’s why Dr. Henderson partnered with a renowned South African psychiatrist to establish the Africa Global Mental Health Institute (AGMHI) nearly eight years ago. Today, AGMHI fosters collaborations across more than 25 countries and is working to shift stigmas and improve mental health care for people of African descent—no matter where they are in the world.
