Oral drugs called PDE type-5 inhibitors are a common treatment for erectile dysfunction. These medications improve blood flow to the penis, helping you get and maintain an erection.

PDE type-5 inhibitors approved by the FDA are:

  • Viagra® (sildenafil)
  • Levitra® (vardenafil)
  • Cialis® (tadalafil)
  • Stendra® (avanafil)

Some of these medications should be taken about an hour before sex, while others can be taken daily. When used correctly, medications for erectile dysfunction help about 70 percent of men have better erections.

Do not take any of these medications if you take nitrates for a heart condition.
