The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Program at Boston Medical Center serves children and families with blood disorders in the Greater Boston area. Genetic abnormalities of the blood (hemoglobinopathies), such as sickle cell disease are a main focus of the program, but we also provide evaluation and ongoing care for children and adolescents with a variety of blood disorders and other ‘orphan’ illnesses such as histiocytosis. We are happy also to provide a second opinion for leukemia or other childhood cancers.

Some of the more common diseases and disorders we see at the program include:

  • Sickle cell anemia, and related disorders
  • Thalassemias (an amino acid imbalance)
  • Nutritional related anemias
  • Coagulation defects
  • Platelet disorders
  • White cell disorders
  • Histiocytic diseases
    Autoimmune diseases affecting the blood
