Department of Anesthesiology

What We Do: Research
The department is in the process of expanding the number and diversity of clinical research activities. Support services such as statistical analysis, data management, literature searches, and manuscript formatting are being developed to encourage collaboration and facilitate clinical investigation by the faculty and residents. To every extent possible, residents and fellows are encouraged to work with faculty mentors on all phases of our research activities. For example our cardiac fellow this year helped design and submit a protocol for IRB approval and outside funding. We anticipate that the fellow will be instrumental in carrying out this protocol and reporting the results. The protocol will compare post-operative pulmonary function of patients undergoing AVR using the median sternotomy approach with those having a minimally invasive approach.

Areas of ongoing or pending investigation include:

  • Effects of dopamine, mannitol, allopurinal and pulsatile flow on renal function during and after cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Dual chamber pacing using a novel device attachable to TEE probes
  • Comparison of propofol and propofol combined with brevital or pentothal for outpatient surgery
  • Comparison of IV PCA with trans-cutaneous PCA device (E-TRANS)
  • Clinical validation and comparison of various new devices for non-invasive measurement of cardiac output.
  • Effects of pH on onset, duration and pain on injection with IV regionalblocks
  • Utility and safety of a new EEG monitor as an adjunct to standard anesthesia care.
  • Comparison of post-operative pulmonary function of patients undergoing AVR using median sternotomy approach with those having a minimally invasive approach.
