## Overview of ASD

The [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention](https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/facts.html) and the [National Institute of Health](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/autism-spectrum-disorders-asd/index.shtml) have information that is helpful in understanding the symptoms, risk factors, and treatments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

## DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria

The official ASD diagnostic criteria according to the 5th edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5), published in May 2013, is [here](http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/hcp-dsm.html). It differentiates three levels of severity based on the categories of social communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors.
