Mexican Hot Chocolate

  • 2½ cup low-fat (1%) milk or almond milk
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 ounce bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon chile powder
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (optional)


  1. Heat milk in a small saucepan over very low heat until hot, but not boiling.
  2. Mix together cocoa powder and sugar. Add cocoa mixture, chopped chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon to the milk. Whisk thoroughly until chocolate has melted and milk begins to simmer.
  3. Do not boil. Pour into two mugs and garnish with chile powder and cinnamon sticks.
