The Advanced track (# 1257040A0) is a 3-year program where the applicant would need to secure a first-year position elsewhere. We offer 11 positions in the NRMP match each year; 4 Advanced and 7 Categorical.

Categorical Anesthesiology Program

The Categorical Anesthesiology Program is a surgical-based PGY-1 year which is co-administered with the Department of Surgery at the Boston VA Healthcare System (BVAHS). The BVAHS provides tertiary surgical care at two campuses, one in West Roxbury and one in Jamaica Plain. The academic year for PGY-1's will be broken down as follows:

  • 1 month of anesthesiology
  • 1 month of cardiology (mornings focus on normal and abnormal ECG interpretation, echocardiograms in the afternoons)
  • 2 months of critical care medicine (one month of ICU at the VA, and another month in the Boston Medical Center SICU)
  • 1 month of emergency medicine
  • 1 month of otorhinolaryngology (with a focus on performing awake nasal fiber-optic examinations)
  • 1 month in the Pre-Admission Clinic (triaging patient comorbidities, learning indications for pre-procedural testing, and designing anesthesia plans for surgeries)
  • 5 months on the general surgery wards

Four weeks of vacation will be provided during the year.

Altus Suite – Assessments of Non-cognitive Skills for Selection

All applications applying to the Anesthesiology Residency Program at Boston Medical Center are required to complete an online suite of assessments (Altus Suite), to assist with our selection process for the 2021/22 application cycle.

Altus Suite is a standardized, three-part online assessment of non-cognitive skills, interpersonal characteristics, and personal values and priorities that we believe are important for successful residents of our program. Altus Suite will complement the other tools that we use for applicant review and evaluation. In implementing Altus Suite, we are trying to further enhance fairness and objectivity in our selection process.

Altus Suite consists of:

  • Casper: 60-90 minute online, open-response situational judgment test
  • Snapshot: 10 minute one-way video interview with standardized questions
  • Duet: 15 minute value-alignment assessment

You will register for Altus Suite for CSP-20101 – U.S. Graduate Medical Education.

Access www.takealtus.com to learn more about the three-part assessment, important dates and requirements, and to create your account.
