Hematuria is a condition where there are red blood cells in your urine. There are two types:

- Gross hematuria, when you can see the blood in your urine
- Microscopic hematuria, where the blood can only be seen under a microscope or with a urine test

Hematuria usually doesn't cause symptoms beyond a change in your urine color.

You're more likely to have blood in your urine if you have other conditions that affect the urinary tract, including the prostate, if you've had a recent infection, or if you take medications such as blood thinners. Treating the underlying cause will usually cure hematuria.
