NEW: Upcoming Lobby Screening Changes

The screening process for patients and visitors will change as of Monday, September 13. This change is due largely to the fact that our experience has shown that the multiple-level screening process with redundancies from the last year and a half often did not consistently achieve the desired results. Therefore, starting Monday, BMC will put into place practices to streamline our process and improve flow. These practices are similar to other hospitals in Boston.

We will continue to have people staffed at every entrance in our lobbies, but they will no longer check appointments and issue wristbands. Instead, everyone who comes into a BMC building will be given a mask, asked to sanitize their hands, and reminded that they should stay home if they are symptomatic or have been exposed to COVID-19. Patients will then be sent to their appointments, while visitors will be directed to the information desk for passes. Individual clinics will continue to ask patients about COVID-19 symptoms and exposure.

Please continue to follow all necessary PPE guidelines for your role. PPE adherence has proven to be reliable for preventing transmission in instances where clinicians come into contact with patients or visitors who do not disclose symptoms or recent exposure to the clinic.

REMINDER: All BMC Health System Employees and LIPs Must Be Vaccinated Against COVID-19 and Record Compliance in the Employee Health Portal by October 15, 2021

The deadline for COVID-19 vaccination compliance for BMC employees and licensed independent practitioners (LIPs) – which means having obtained at least one vaccine dose and entering your vaccination status in the Employee Health Portal is October 15, 2021. All requests for exemptions are due by September 17, but should be submitted as soon as possible as they are being reviewed on a rolling basis. All employees and LIPs must be compliant by October 15, 2021, in order to maintain employment status at Boston Medical Center Health System.

Click here for a tip sheet on how to access your BMCHS Employee Health portal and record evidence of your COVID vaccination compliance in the BMCHS Employee Health portal.

REMINDER: All Employees Working on Campus Must Complete Symptom Screener

A core component of keeping all employees safe is symptom screening. Please do not come to work with COVID-19 symptoms, even if you have been vaccinated.

Employees and licensed independent practitioners scheduled for shifts on BMC’s main campus or in Quincy are required to use the COVID-19 symptom screening tool in Enterprise Health as part of the daily screening process prior to coming to work each shift.

Please take your time and answer your daily work symptom screener honestly. Examples of COVID-19 symptoms include cold and allergy symptoms, cough or sore throat, or a loss of taste and smell.

REMINDER: COVID-19 Employee Testing Available

Please get tested for COVID if you have any symptoms or have been directly exposed to a COVID-positive person. True exposures are defined as being within six feet of another individuals for > 15 minutes without appropriate PPE (i.e. no eye protection for COVID-negative patients, or no N95 for COVID-positive patients). This definition is the same regardless of whether the individual is vaccinated or not.

All employee testing is by appointment only.

  • Symptomatic testing for employees with symptoms or exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19 is available seven days a week. Email to schedule an appointment.
  • Asymptomatic testing for indirect exposures and post-travel is available seven days a week. Email to schedule an appointment.
  • Asymptomatic testing for pre-gathering, pre-travel, and peace of mind: Employees can self-schedule an appointment through MyChart. Appointments are available Monday through Friday during the day at the Crosstown ILI Clinic, 801 Mass Ave. ground floor.

NEW: 2021 Flu Campaign for Patients – Information Regarding Patients with COVID-19

The 2021 influenza (flu) vaccine campaign for patients will begin on September 9 in Ambulatory Clinics and September 21 in inpatient and Moakley hematology oncology areas. It is important to vaccinate our patients and ourselves against the flu early to avoid infection and potential serious complications from having the flu. Please note that the influenza vaccine and COVID-19 vaccine can be administered at the same time.

Information on the 2021 employee flu campaign will be shared soon.

If you have any questions regarding the 2021 patient flu vaccine campaign, please contact Lois Howry for ambulatory or Meg Grande for inpatient.
