 ## Frequently Asked Questions

You may have questions about whether you can get an abortion and what will happen during the procedure. Our team is here to help.

 ### What types of anesthesia are available for the procedure?

We offer several options, including local anesthesia, moderate sedation (similar to twilight sleep), and deeper sedation, provided in our individual procedure unit.

  ### What should I do on the day of my procedure if I choose anesthesia?

If you take a weekly injectable diabetes or weight loss medication, you must stop it one week before your procedure with sedation. You must not eat or drink after midnight on the day before your surgical abortion.

You will also need an escort who is over 18 years old to go home with you after your procedure is complete. Your privacy will be fully protected, and we will not share any information about your visit with your escort.

  ### Can I have an abortion if I’m under 18?

Yes. If you are under 18, please contact us to speak with our program coordinator, who can guide you through the process and help schedule your appointment.

In Massachusetts, you need parental consent if you are younger than 16. If you are 16 or older, you can receive care here on your own.

  ### Can I receive counseling and have my abortion on the same day?

In many cases, yes. However, if you are in the second trimester (over 14 weeks), you may need two separate visits. Please call us so we can discuss the process and figure out the best approach for you.

  ### Can I receive abortion care at Boston Medical Center if I have a complicated medical history?

Yes. Our team specializes in providing care for individuals with complex medical and social histories. We are here to support you and ensure you get the care you need.

  ### What if I am too far in my pregnancy for an abortion in Massachusetts?

Please call us so we can refer you to care in a state where you may be able to receive abortion care.
