BMC “Thank You Week”

UPDATED: N95 Distribution

Over 90% of N95 masks are now being successfully distributed using the scrub machines in the building lobbies. Over the course of the next week we will be reducing the availability of the Menino Lobby distribution table to slowly transition to relying fully on the scrub machines for this distribution. The instructions below have been added to all of the machines should users encounter any difficulty.

N95 Machine Access Instructions

  1. Scan badge on Reader*
  2. Open door number displayed
  3. Retrieve mask from compartment

*If an error code is displayed please take a picture of the error code and send along with mask type and employee number to [email protected]

Please note you must be fit tested before receiving an N95 Mask. All inquiries please email us at [email protected]. If you received the wrong mask or need a mask for your shift, please call Transport at 617-414-5830. You may also go directly to the Transport Office, located in the Menino Basement.

REMINDER: Upcoming Fit Testing Sessions

We are reaching critical levels of Gerson 2130 mask supplies. All individuals who have previously worn a 3M 1860 Regular and were fit-tested after October 2019 will be reassigned back to the 3M 1860. All other individuals wearing a Gerson 2130 need to report to the fit testing area as soon as possible to get fitted to a different mask.

Drop-in fit testing will be offered in the Menino 2B conference room on the following dates and times:

  • Thursday, July 23: 2 – 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 29: 4:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • Friday, July 31: 6 – 9 a.m.

REMINDER: Updated N95 Guidelines for Ambulatory Areas

Please only take an N95 mask in the following situations:

  • If you are participating in aerosolizing procedure and/or caring for COVID+, PUI, or TB patients.
  • Option for staff performing non-aerosolizing procedures or visits within 6 feet of patients who must be unmasked for >10 minutes: Staff may substitute a surgical mask with an N95. One N95 per week may be used for all visits and non-aerosolizing procedures that meet this criterion.

REMINDER: Daily COVID-19 Symptom Screening Tool for All Employees Now in Use

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts mandates that all healthcare employees complete a symptom screening prior to coming on site each day. As of July 7, BMC employees and licensed independent practitioners scheduled for shifts on BMC’s main campus are required to use the COVID-19 symptom screening tool in Enterprise Health as part of the daily screening process prior to coming to work each shift. Click here for a tip sheet for completing the symptom screening tool.

Each BMC and BUMG employee should be receiving a daily reminder via email and/or SMS text message. If you are not receiving these please email [email protected]. These reminders will be sent seven days a week, between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. If your next scheduled shift is 24 hours or more in the future, you can simply ignore and delete the daily reminders.

REMINDER: Visitor Policy

As of June 30 we updated our visitor policy to allow one identified visitor for adult inpatients during the hours of 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. The identified person will be the only visitor allowed for the duration of the adult inpatient’s hospital stay.

We will continue to only allow visitors over the age of 18. All visitors will be screened for symptoms of possible COVID-19 infection and required to wear a mask at all times during their visit. Visitor restrictions continue in the following areas:

  • Emergency Department
  • Surgical Services
  • Ambulatory Clinics

REMINDER: Research Studies - COVID-19 Antibody Testing in Healthcare Workers

Two studies – (PI: Yachana Kataria - H-40503) and (PI: Karen Jacobson - H-40223) – at BMC are seeking to learn more about COVID-19 infection among those in the healthcare worker population who worked on campus during the surge using survey data, measurement of COVID IgG (antibodies/serology), and DNA.

They will be recruiting from July 13 through July 26 (6 a.m.-6 p.m. at Shapiro 5C). You may drop in during these times to learn more or participate. The results of the SARS-CoV-2 IgG (serology test) will be available to study subjects a few weeks after completion of consent, a survey and blood draw. Click here to learn more on the Hub. 

REMINDER: Study on How COVID-19 Has Affected Employees on the Front Lines

Employees and licensed independent practitioners are invited to take part in an anonymous research study conducted by the Otolaryngology and Psychiatry departments to understand how COVID-19 has affected Boston Medical Center providers on the front lines. This study includes all employees who have worked at BMC during the COVID-19 crisis.

If you decide to participate, you will be asked to take a short survey online about your perspective on COVID-19. The survey should take no longer than 7-10 minutes. We believe that this study will help us in gaining information to protect and promote the well-being of our providers.
