Boston Medical Center Health System Names James Phalen as Board Chair; Matthew Botein, James Blue to Board of Trustees
(Boston) – July 14, 2016 – Boston Medical Center Health System has elected James S. Phalen, an experienced financial industry executive, as chairman of its Board of Trustees. Phalen has served on the BMC Hospital Board of Trustees since 2010 and on the BMC Health System Board of Trustees since 2013. The BMC Health System Board oversees the operations of Boston Medical Center and BMC HealthNet Plan and their affiliates.
“Jim has been a strong supporter of our hospital and health plan for many years, and we are thrilled to have him expand his leadership role as Chairman of the BMC Health System Board of Trustees,” said Kate Walsh, President and CEO of BMC. “His fiscal expertise and dedication to the BMC Health System’s mission are sure to serve the system well as we continue to develop unique ways to integrate patient care, provide great coverage to our members and create innovative solutions to the health care issues they face.”
Phalen succeeds Ted English, who served as chairman of the Hospital Board of Trustees for seven years and the BMC Health System board of trustees for three years. English remains a member of the BMC hospital Board of Trustees. Phalen is vice chairman and executive vice president at State Street Corporation, where he has held numerous positions, including head of Global Operations and Technology, as well as head of international operations for investment services and investment research and trading. He was formerly chairman and CEO of CitiStreet, one of the largest global benefits delivery firms in the country. He is a graduate of Boston College and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.
“We want to thank Ted for his tremendous commitment over the years,” Walsh said. “His dedication and passion are unparalleled. We are grateful for all of the time and effort he has put into our system, helping us to become more competitive, while never losing sight of our mission, vision and values.”
The BMC Health System Board of Trustees also named Matthew Botein and James Blue as new trustees. Their appointments, as well as Phalen’s, are effective immediately.
“Matt and Jim bring unique skill sets and perspectives to the BMC Health System Board of Trustees, and we are confident that they will make significant contributions to the board’s support and leadership for the system as a whole,” Walsh said. “We appreciate their commitment to helping us better serve our patients and members every day.”
