Boston Medical Center Pediatrics Recognized for Comprehensive, Patient-Centered Approach to Care

(Boston) – Feb. 10, 2015 – Boston Medical Center’s (BMC) Department of Pediatrics was recognized as a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home, the highest distinction possible, by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). The program highlights primary care providers who use evidence-based, patient-centered processes to provide highly organized care, work in teams to coordinate, track, and improve care, and focus on long‐term, participative relationships.

The NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) is a model of primary care that combines teamwork and information technology to improve care, improve patients’ experience of care, and reduce costs. Medical homes foster ongoing partnerships between patients and their personal clinicians, instead of approaching care as the sum of episodic office visits. Each patient’s care is overseen by clinician-led care teams that coordinate treatment across the health care system. Research shows that medical homes can lead to higher quality and lower costs, and can improve patient and provider reported experiences of care.

“NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home Recognition raises the bar in defining high-quality care by emphasizing access, health information technology and coordinated care focused on patients,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane. “Recognition shows that Boston Medical Center has the tools, systems and resources to provide its patients with the right care, at the right time.”

As a Level 3 PCMH, BMC met several high standards, including the following, among others:

  • Use of data to show standards for patient access and communication are met
  • Use of data to identify important diagnoses and conditions in practice
  • Adoption and implementation of evidence-based guidelines for three chronic or important conditions
  • Active support of patient self-management
  • Systematic tracking of critical referrals
  • Measurement of clinical and/or service performance

“Our highly motivated and dedicated team of pediatricians provide exceptional coordinated, patient-centered care for patients each and every day, and I applaud them for this well-deserved recognition,” said Robert Vinci, MD, chief of pediatrics at BMC and chair of pediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM).

BMC’s Level 3 Recognition is valid for three years. NCQA standards are aligned with the joint principles of the Patient-Centered Medical Home established with the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Osteopathic Association.

BMC’s Pediatric Primary Care goes the extra mile to help families raising children in Boston: Thanks to the Reach Out and Read Program, every child gets a book at every check-up from ages 6 months to 6 years old; the Health Leads Family Help Desk volunteers help families find out what services are available in their neighborhoods, including after school programs, child care and youth recreation; through Medical-Legal Partnership | Boston, lawyers are available for families with more complicated problems (including problems with school or housing); pain-free pediatrics and child life specialists help take the sting and the fear out of visiting the doctor’s office; and BMC’s Comprehensive Care Program supports families of children with chronic medical conditions.
